X Files - I Want to Believe

Rating (1-10, 10 being highest): 4

Quick Rating: (skip, watch, watch when no other choice): Skip it

Story Line: David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reunite as they investigate a human abduction ring with the help of a psychic ex-priest.

What's good: Nothing new.

What's bad: Nothing to be excited about.

Bottom line: It is better to stay as a TV series than a big screen movie.

Slumdog Millionaire

Rating (1-10, 10 being highest): 7

Quick Rating: (skip, watch, watch when no other choice): Watch it

Story Line: A call center guy grown up in an Indian slum won big at the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire show in India.

What's good: I think the cinematography stands out in this movie. The movie intertwines the tv show questions with the life in the slums as Jamal (Dev Patel). Freida Pinto as Jamal's love, Latika, is lovely.

What's bad: The storyline is good, but I think the climax does not get to touch people as much.

Bottom line: It is a good movie, oscar quality, maybe not one of the best, but enjoyable.

Saw V

Rating (1-10, 10 being highest): 2

Quick Rating: (skip, watch, watch when no other choice): Skip it

Story Line: Tobin Bell's Jig Saw gets another accomplice even though he was killed off two installments ago.

What's good: The gore is definitely there. There are very few horror movies do any impact on me, but the gore of flesh and blood is what keeps the Saw series alive. Of course, the game set up is clever as usual.

What's bad: You do get bored on the fifth try.

Bottom line: As much as a Saw fan myself, I have to say Saw V has formally run out of steam, brings nothing new and we are longing for a new orignial franchise.

Max Payne

Rating (1-10, 10 being highest): 4

Quick Rating: (skip, watch, watch when no other choice): Skip it

Story Line: Mark Wahlberg as Max Payne seeks for the killer of his wife and child.

What's good: Not much.

What's bad: Mark Wahlberg can't save a weak script. Action sequence is limited and not exciting. Wahlberg's The Sniper is a much better movie.

Bottom line: If you are a Mark Wahlberg fan, you will be disappointed. If you are a Max Payne video game fan, you will also be disappointed.

Mr. Brooks

Rating (1-10, 10 being highest): 6

Quick Rating: (skip, watch, watch when no other choice): Watch it

Story Line: Kevin Costner as a smart businessman with an addiction to kill inocent people. He faces all kinds of troubles from his recent kill (Dane Cook), a pursuing detective (Demi Moore), a troubled daughter (Danielle Panabaker), and his inner foe (William Hurt).

What's good: The script is strong and Mr. Brooks is a smart criminal and Kevin Costner depicts him well. William Hurt as the inner sounding board is well acted out also.

What's bad: The intensity is not high enough. Demi Moore is not good in this movie.

Bottom line: A good drama movie and could be worth a watch if no other better choices.

Death Race

Rating (1-10, 10 being highest): 7.5

Quick Rating: (skip, watch, watch when no other choice): Watch it

Story Line: Jason Statham as an inmate in a custom armored car and races to kill.

What's good: Nonstop car race and shooting through car armory action. Natalie Martinez as his navigator is hot. Tyrese Gibson as Statham's main race opponent poses credible threat and meanness.

What's bad: Joan Allen as the warden is not as mean as I perceive. Not much to pick on. Maybe it is a little too fast for Natalie Martinez to falls in love with Statham.

Bottom line: Watching this movie is like being part of car race and killing video game. As a typical guy, I like the action, the setting, the nonstop adrenaline and Jason Statham is back in his Crank like mode.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Rating (1-10, 10 being highest): 3

Quick Rating: (skip, watch, watch when no other choice): Skip it

Story Line: Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones is in search of the crystal skull with his son (Shia LaBeouf), and Cate Blanchett's soviet team is hot on their tail.

What's good: None.

What's bad: Harrison Ford is definitely wearing out as an explorer. And I am never a fan for Shia LaBeouf - don't know why Steven Spielberg chooses him to be his next big star.

Bottom line: This Indiana Jones bring no fresh air and no good action. Everything is predictable and there is no secret wonders that we haven't seen before. If you are a history/archeology buff, you are better off watching Nicholas Cage's National Treasure 1 or 2.
